MyDiskServer updated with Nintendo Wii support
Following the release of the Internet Channel on the Nintendo Wii I have updated MyDiskServer to work better with the Wii. Now you can access all your files on your PC from the Nintendo Wii in the living room.
A Flash mp3 player is now embedded into MyDiskServer so that you can listen to your music collection on your Wii. Viewing photos has also been enhanced.
The main upgrade in this release was to the private networking code. This update means that MyDiskServer will work fully with devices on your local network even if netbios name service is not implemented. This was an issue with Macs and some Linux distributions including the Nintendo Wii.
There is also a Dutch translation thanks to Melroy van den Berg.

MyDiskServer Updated
Firstly I would like to appologise for the recent lack of updates.
I've been very busy moving house, finishing off PhD thesis, looking for jobs, being interviewed by google etc...
Anyway, enough with the excuses, I'm here to ping everyone with the news that an updated version of MyDiskServer is online. It's minor bug fixes really. I've fixed an issue with files not being properly closed if a download was disconnected before completion and also fixed the java.lang.LinkageError which occured when multiple copies of the same plugin were shared.
Simply visit MyDisk.co.uk and click launch and your version will be updated to 2.11 automatically.

German Translation

MyDisk.co.uk has been modified to use PHP. This was to enable me to avoid duplication of the main page for each language. Now the language is handled by index.php. The language can be customised by setting a lang field. Eg MyDisk.co.uk/?lang=de

Software awards
MyDiskServer has won a number of awards including the following:
vista-files.org - Grade 5
daolnwod.net - 5 Stars
mac-files.com - Grade 5
freesharewarecenter.com - 5 Stars
soooooft.com - 5 Stars
hotlib.com - 5 Stars
butterflydownload.com - 5 Stars
programsbase.com - 5 Stars
blueprograms.com - 5/5 Award
softpicks.net - 4 Stars
download2you.com - 4 Stars
safe-install.com - "Safe to install"

Why don't I display these on the main pages I hear you ask? Well...
1. I think their logos are pretty crap and would make the main pages look cluttered.
2. In my experience these logos come, go and change unpredictably.
3. I am not convinced these sites actually reviewed MyDiskSever, because...
4. The only reason sites issue the logos is to get a free link back to their site.
A tip for software site's: Don't just give an award, write a meaningful review.

Remote Computer Control
This weekend I developed a very useful plugin.

The plugin provides remote control of computers running MyDiskServer.
Although not as advanced as VNC or Remote Desktop Sharing, the plugin has some major advantages:
It requires NO additional software to view or control the computer remotely, not even Java, and since it uses HTTP it will work through any firewall!
To remotely control a computer running MyDiskServer, high security mode must be disabled, a user account configured with the plugin shared to it and the identity key must be specified. These layers ensure the computer remains safe when the plugin is installed.
The plugin can be downloaded from the plugins page (assuming you have donated)

Isolating hosts
Version 2.06, released today, features a new option to isolate hosts.
Isolated instances of MyDiskServer will no longer be linked to or associated to the Host Yourself Network in any way. If you wish to connect to isolated hosts you must use the IP and port. For example:
http://123.456.789.012:8088
You must register again to become linked to the Host Yourself Network.
Rather than shutting down hosts I find breaking copyright laws by sharing files to everyone I will isolate them.
Some users may also wish to run MyDiskServer isolated if they are not on the Internet or do not trust communications with the Host Yourself Network.

Windows Firewall
When starting, MyDiskServer executes the following commands:
netsh firewall add portopening TCP 8088 MyDiskServer
netsh firewall add portopening TCP 8089 MyDiskServer
And on closing:
netsh firewall delete portopening TCP 8088
netsh firewall delete portopening TCP 8089
Obviously if you specify different ports, those are used instead of 8088 and 8089. This feature helps keep Windows more secure when not running MyDiskServer.

Version 2.03 of MyDiskServer
This updated version includes support for Wake On LAN which means you should be able to turn on your computer remotely with the right hardware configuration.
This could be extremely useful for saving money on your electricity bill, and the worlds resources of course!

New minor update to MyDiskServer
I have made a few changes to MyDiskServer. (now version 2.02)
Firstly, I've added the ability to change the Look and Feel. The main reason for this is because people have been having problems with the Mac Look and Feel which was set by default when starting MyDiskServer on a Mac computer. Hopefully this will solve these issues, the default L&F is now cross platform.
If you run windows XP and use java 1.5+ I recommend using the Windows L&F, it looks really nice.
Other changes include the ability to start MyDiskServer without the GUI. Simply use this jnlp file to start without the overheads of the GUI.
http://hostyourself.net/mydiskserver/MyDiskServer(noGUI).jnlp
To start the GUI connect to your computer and access the file /IPC for example:
http://127.0.0.1:8088/IPC
There are several options on this control page such as shutdown and send message in addition to showing and hiding the GUI.
If the new features are not currently available to you ,visit the main page and click the launch MyDiskServer link.
