Configuration guide
A step by step guide to configuring MyDiskServer for sharing files securely online.
1. Agree to the software license

After clicking launch, MyDiskServer will begin running. Assuming you have not used MyDiskServer before, you will see the above license agreement. Carefully read the agreement and click Agree to continue.
2. Configure network connections
MyDiskServer will automatically test your connection to establish whether connections can be made to your computer from the Internet.

This is typically the next screen you will see. Many computers are protected behind a firewall, a router or both. For other computers to connect to MyDiskServer we have to perform an administrative task. I have written a separate page about how to open ports for users who do not understand the brief outline above. After configuring your firewall and/or router click Retry to test the connection again.

After successfully configuring your connection you will see the above.
3. Register an identity

The next task is to register an identity and a hub. This information is what you will use to connect to your computer from the Internet.
For example, I have specified the identity mike-desktop and the hub test . When I visit the home page I can connect to my desktop computer by typing mike-desktop and specifying the hub test.
The default identity is your computer name. Make an identity that you can remember. The identity key is a password which enables you to maintain ownership of an identity. The identity key must be used on subsequent requests to use the same identity. This ensures no one else can use the identity you have registered.

Congratulations, if you see the above, MyDiskServer is configured on your computer and can be accessed from almost any device on the Internet using your online identity.
4. Add a new user
The next step is to start sharing some files. Click the add new user button: ![]()

Enter the username and password which will be required to access your files online. You may also specify a maximum transfer rate and give the user the ability to upload files. Click Next.
Use the file tree to specify the files you want to share. To expand a folder, to see its contents, click the symbol to the left of it or double click the folder itself. To share a file or folder, right click on it. If you right click on a folder, all contents within the folder will also be shared.
Shared files and folders have a blue background. You may have noticed there are several shades of blue. The darkest shade indicates the top level of a shared file or folder. The lighter blue indicates that the item is shared because its parent folder is shared. The very faint blue indicates that something is shared inside. This is to help navigate a complicated filing structure of shared files. Basically, if a file or folder has a dark blue it is shared..
When you have chosen which files to share click Done.
You are now hosting files online using your personal computer!
5. Access files remotely
From any Internet browser online, you can now connect to the computer running MyDiskServer by specifying the identity and hub on the hostyourself.net homepage.

You will be able to see when users access files, as illustrated above, by observing the MyDiskServer interface.
You may have noticed the guest tab. This is a special user tab which allows you to share files to everyone and no username or password will be required. Please remember, you must only share files to everyone if you own the copyright or have permission from the copyright holder to do so.
